Just thought I would make a thread to see who you think are the top 5 Boxers of all time. ;D
1. Mike Tyson -
It was a hard choice to make putting him above Ali. But a Cus D'Amato trained Mike Tyson is the standard of what a Heavyweight boxer should be. Great foot work, good head movement, accurate punching, along with insane power, makes Tyson the most feared Boxer in boxing history.
2. Muhammad Ali -
You can't hit something you cannot see. That is the best way to describe Ali. His lack of power is forgiven because of his footwork, flare, and intelligence in the ring.
3. Joe Louis -
With a record of 66-3-0 Louis had the perfect combination of punch power, great chin, and the heart of a lion.
4. Wladimir Klitschko -
I have to put Klitschko on this list, because he is just so disciplined in the ring. He knows he is not very athletic, and he is not looking for the one punch knockout. But he is 6 ft 6 in and he fights like it. He stand tall, has great concentration by keeping his distance with his heavy handed jab, and will literally pick you a part with his combo shots.
5. Thomas "Hit Man" Hearns -
Hearns hits like a heavyweight. He has great savy in the ring, and one of the best at finishing a fight if he smells blood.
I have a ton of honorable mentions.
George Foreman Sugar Ray Robinson Sugar Ray Leanord Jack Dempsy Roberto Duran Rocky Marciano
I can go on all day. But this top 5 are my favorites.
How about you guys?

favorite or greatest? I think we all have different favorites, i think Tyson a lot of people would pick. But he was not greatest he was at the top for too short to be great.

I guess it's all a matter of opinion. See in my opinion it doesn't matter how long he was there. He shot up the ranks like a rocket, won the title very very young, and went through his opponents like a hot knife slices through butter.
But again that's my opinion, so I will say your top 5 favorites.

If you are talking favourites then your list can be whatever you like but if you are talking an objective debate about who were the best then I think that your list is miles & miles from being right.
Tyson lost to the other elite heavyweights that he faced (Lewis & Holyfield) albeit after he had peaked but you must judge him on his performances against other elite fighters, not the relatively mediocre division that he cleaned out.
WK has an even weaker case, he has presided over possibly the weakest heavyweight division in history and has not beaten one fighter who could be remotely considered as an elite heavyweight. It is debatable as to whether WK is even the best fighter in his own family...
Tommy Hearns was a great fighter, an elite welterweight who might make the top ten list at that weight. He was however beaten by 2 other all time greats in the form of Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler and personally I think you could make a strong case for both of them being higher on an all time great list.
Ali would make many people's all time great list and Joe Louis similarly can make a claim. It would be difficult to have an all time list that did not contain either Sugar Ray Robinson or Henry Armstrong, if you aren't aware of what they achieved then I strongly suggest looking them up...

I'll do a top 3 as it just becomes too difficult after that:
1. Sugar Ray Robinson - Likely the greatest welterweight whoever lived, combined speed, power and defensive skill to dominate the division before moving up to middleweight and dominating their too. His opponent list reads like a who's who of all time boxing greats and only very late in his career does he become beatable on a regualr basis.
2. Henry Armstrong - Homicide Hank held the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight titles concurrently at a time when there were only 8 world titles that could be won. Armstrong fought at a ferocious pace and relentlessly wore down his opponents with his pressure fighting style.
3. Muhammad Ali - Prevailed in arguably the greatest heavyweight era of them all. Ali beat fellow all time greats such as Liston, Frazier & Foreman and did over a 15 year period that included a 3 year enforced layoff due to the Vietnam War. Few fighters could have come back after 3 years out of the ring and return at the very top but Ali managed it and this might argue for him being even higher on the list.

Not qualified to make a remotely scientific list but anyways for me : 1. Sugar Ray Robinson : Flowed as much as moved , inventive , fast , good stopping power . 2. Muhammad Ali : Footwork , handspeed , talent , reflexes ( also charisma & a conscience ) 3. Sugar Ray Leonard : Too fast for most to handle , skill , class ( even 8 yr old me couldn't miss , this guy was astonishing ) . 4. Rocky Marciano : Not the most technical but trained so hard the 15th round wasnt much different from the first for him , hit like a truck ( his defence was the other guy falling down ) , smart enough to get out while still at the top of his game . 5. "Iron"Mike Tyson : Destructive & all conquering at his best ( gets the nostalgic nod due to being amazing in the 80s when I was young & ITV showed WT fights on regular TV ) . Also : Louis , Hagler , Tunney , Dempsey . Special note : Butterbean , Sylvester Stallone , Philo Beddoe and little Mac out of Nintendo

My top 5 FAVORITES not GREATEST...
#1-Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini-He is the one that got me hooked on boxing when he lost to another one of my top 5 Alexis Arguello he fought the fight of his life and i knew that he would win his next title bout...He was never the same after the Duk Koo Kim fight which was a shame...
#2-Julio Ceasar Chavez-He stayed a little to long but what a champion he was and what a body puncher...
#3-Alexis Arguello-Not just one of the greats of all-time but a great human being it was hard to watch him get his ass beat against Aaron Pryor...
#4-Marvelous Marvin Hagler-A great champion and warrior. i was really disappointed that he never fought again after the leonard fight. He thought the fight game was fixed even though i thought that he did lose the Leonard fight.
#5-Sugar Ray Leonard & Tommy Hearns-I can't pick over one or the other they were both exciting to watch and always fought good opponents. Leonard finally admitted that the draw in Leonard-Hearns-II should have been a victory for Hearns...
Honorable Mention-Costa Tszyu & Salvador Sanchez-Tszyu was a champion for a long time but did not get any recognition from any television stations and Salvador died at a very young age but he was a true warrior and tougher than nails. ;D

I know this thread is old but I felt their would be no harm in me posting my list.
1. Sugar Ray Leonard This guy fought the best, beat the best, and sometimes lost to the best. He fought hall of famers, he fought hall of famers that fought hall of famers. With victories over Roberto Duran, the former Undisputed Lightweight Champion, Welterweight Champion, and after their fight became Middleweight Champion. He fought Tommy Hearns and beat him in the biggest comeback in boxing history down on the score cards on the 14th round, Angelo DUndee tells him he is going to lose and he comes back and knocks him out. Tommy Hearns is also and Undisputed Welterweight Champion at the time. After the fight he went on to become Middleweight Champion, Super Middleweight Champion, Light Heavyweight Champion, and Cruiserweight Champion. He fought Marvin Haggler in what I thought was a very close fight
2. Roberto Duran He beat Sugar Ray Leonard who is the GOAT in my opinion during his prime but Sugar Ray Leonard learned form his loss and beat him in a revenge match. He fought against other greats like Haggler and Hearns and he was the most dominant Lightweight champion of all time. Also becoming a welterweight and middleweight Champion. Reason why he is in my number 2 list was because of his attitude. He was a true vicious warrior and a charismatic bad boy but was also a very nice guy. If any modern fighters had half the charisma he had boxing would be so much more exciting.
3. Felix Trinidad Very Underrated champion. Like Ray Leonard he fought the best, beat the best, and lost to the best. He also fought hall of famers and fought hall of famers that fought hall of famers. With Victories over Oscar De La Hoya, Pernell Whittaker, Hector Camacho. As well as fights with other greats like Winky Wright, Roy Jones jr, and Bernard Hopkins. Amazing fighter that does not get much credit for his accomplishment.
4. Manny Pacquiao Unfortunately he is no where near as successful as he once was. While still dominating some younger champs and p4p fighters like timothy bradley. We all know this pacquiao is no where near as dominant as pacquiao was 5 years ago. First fighter ever to get belts in 8 different weight classes. Arguably has one of the fastest hands in boxing, shocking power, and underrated boxing skills. Pacquiao dominated many greats starting from Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Miguel Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya, Antonio Margarito, Shane Mosley, Ricky Hatton, and Timothy Bradley. As well as having an exciting 4 fight series with Juan Manuel Marquez. Bottom line no one has ever dominated multiple weight divisions the way this guy has when he was at his prime. And quite honestly I think the 2008/2009 pacquiao was probably one of/if not the best fighter that has ever graced the sport of boxing.
5. Marvin Haggler I had to mention him. Strongest Chin in boxing rivaled by Bernard Hopkins maybe. While he didn't dominate multiple divisions like most the others on my list. He was very dominant over the middleweight divisions with wins over hall of famers and a very close and competitive fight with the GOAT, Sugar Ray Leonard.
Honrable Mentions - Bernard Hopkins, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Roy Jones Jr, Joe Calzaghe, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Juan Manuel Marquez, Klitschko Brothers, Tommy Hearns
Honestly though if I mentioned pacquiao I think I have to give a shout out too floyd mayweather as well. While he is not the most skilled boxer in history, he is the best defensive fighter of all time. His 46-0 record is not that great as he claims simply because he hasn't been as dominant as pacquiao was. While most experts are certain he beats pacquiao if they ever meet... later down the line in history most people will see pacquiao's accomplishments as an 8 weight class world champion and his pure dominance during 2008/2009 and barely remember anything about mayweather's undefeated record. I still personally remember mayweather's amazing peformance against corralles and I remember their was a time he was calling out everyone(he called out tsuyu and he called out oscar and mosley while they were both still in their prime) I just wish he was still like that till this day
Favorite Active Fighters
Lucas Matthysse - Man this guy is like the modern day Roberto Duran. Powerful puncher and underrated boxer. He will bounce back up from his lost against Danny Garcia. He is also currently the main fighter that I follow that isn't the ppv stars. I want to see him fight the best. I want to see him fight Adrien Broner, Ruslan Provodnikov, Brandon Rios, Mike Alvarado, rematch Danny Garcia after he beats all of them. I also want to see him move into the welterweight division and destroy those guys aswell. He has the tools to beat almost anyone.
Andre Ward - This guy is a prototype. He has a style that has never really been seen before and he barely talks yet HBO decided to use him as a commentator haha. Currently the only champion besides Klitschko and Danny Garcia to actually have beaten every other contender and champion in the division. It's gotten so bad that he can't even sign fights anymore because the top contenders that he didn't beat(which are very few) don't even want to fight him even Gennady Golovkin is avoiding him.
Sergio Martinez - This guy is the biggest mystery in boxing. He dominates out of his pure physical abilities and nothing else. He lacks fundamentals and skills. He fights with his hands down, he can't even throw a punch without losing balance on paper he would get dominated by anyone that has any experience in boxing yet he hasn't, his speed, conditioning, and power are more than enough to make up for his lack of fundamentals and skills in the art of boxing. This man defeated the most avoided fighter of our generation Paul Williams with a brutal knockout and ended up becoming the most avoided fighter in the process.
Guillermo Rigondeaux - The exact opposite of Sergio Martinez. He has the physical abilities but that is nothing compared to his pure knowledge of the sweet science. The most fundamentally sound fighter and probably the most skilled fighter. Unfortunately because of Cuban fighters only fighting in the amateurs and not pros. He was unable to fight pro until he and his team-mate Erislandy Lara both escaped Cuba together which to some is considered a late age to turn pro. Since turning pro though he has already beat the guy who was termed the next big thing in boxing which was nonito donaire but because of his "boring" style people don't really want to watch him so his promoter bob arum pretty much ignores him despite probably being the best fighter of all time in terms of skills
Shawn Porter - I was thinking about giving the 5th spot of active fighters to GGG or Keith Thurman but to me they are both a little too green to take that spot. Porter has had less fights than both of of them but victories against bigger threats. Devon Alexander and Paulie Malignaggi are both proven veterans and champs and he beat them both. HE is now going to fight the 2nd most avoided fighter of the welterweight division Kell Brook so props to him. He has also expressed interest in fighting the most avoided fighter in the welterweight division... which is keith thurman.

cool list but GGG is more fun than some of you active list guys, and PBF is still active as is JMM. Favorite can mean so many things, for someone who knows boxing well Rigondeaux is fun to watch for others that now little about boxing Martinez is much more fun. I thought Augustus was fun to watch, but many hate the clowning as degrading to boxing. I figure as long as fights are exciting to get more fans to boxering these are the boxers that sports need. Once someone is hooked they can appreciate great boxing skills. And W. Klitschko is not favorite of mine. Vitaly was much more fun.
